Robust Synthesis

With Robust synthesis, you can obtain designs which are typically more stable with respect to production errors than standard designs.

The new algorithm is based on a simultaneous optimization of a sets of design (design cloud) located in a vicinity of a basic, so called pivotal design.

Robust Synthesis options require more computations than analogous standard OptiLayer synthesis options (about N times more, if N is the number of samples of the design cloud).

In order to start robust synthesis you need to activate Robust synthesis first:

Synthesis > Options > Robust tab > Check Robust Synthesis Enabled

Then you should specify the number of samples. The values 100-500 are reasonable. 

If you would like to take into account errors in layers thicknesses only, specify Absolute or/and Relative Tolerance Size

If you would like to take into account offsets of the refractive indices as well, you need to specify Index Drift limitations and Type of the offset.

There are Types of the offsets. If Per Material option is chosen then systematic offsets will take the same value for all layers of the same material. 

For example, if Index Drift of H materials is specified from -0.01 to 0.01, then refractive index of all H layers in each design from a cloud will be calculated as a sum of a nominal refractive index and a random number from the range [-0.01;0.01]. For each design from the cloud, this random number is different.

 

If Per Layer option is chosen then random offsets will take different values for every new design layer.

For example, if Index Drift of H materials is specified from -0.01 to 0.01, then refractive index of each H layer in each design from a cloud will be calculated as a sum of a nominal refractive index and a random number from the range [-0.01;0.01].
