We invite you to take part in the 14th North American OptiLayer Workshop.

OptiLayer is a world leading thin film software for the design, characterization, and post-production characterization of optical coatings. 

The workshop will be a great opportunity for you to become acquainted with the outstanding capabilities of OptiLayer and to be informed about the features of the newest version.

An attendee can choose to attend only the beginner session, only the advanced session, or both sessions at a reduced rate.

The beginner session will be oriented to attendees that have little to no experience with OptiLayer. They will learn basic principles of OptiLayer software and perform practical exercises. As a result, they will be able to: 

  • Create their own thin film materials/substrates;
  • Evaluate spectral characteristics;
  • Design simple coatings with requested spectral properties;
  • Import measurement data/Export the results/Create reports;
  • Perform characterizations on the basis of photometric data;

The advanced session covers the main topics on core expertise of OptiLayer: 

  • Basic design techniques (refinement, needle optimization, gradual evolution) and design of general purpose coatings;
  • Advanced design tools – stacks, cone angles, line widths, optimization of absorption, robust synthesis, floating constants, integral targets, sensitivity-directed refinement, taper function, robust synthesis;
  • Color evaluation and designing of coatings with color specifications;
  • Designing special types of coatings – laser related coatings, WDM and narrow band pass filters, notch filters;
  • Error analysis and simulation of coating deposition;
  • Advanced thin film characterization and post-production characterization of optical coatings;
  • COM Automation of OptiRE and OptiREOpt Library for control of production with broadband optical monitoring.

All topics will be accompanied by demonstrations and questions on the fly.  

Who should join?

The workshop is oriented to attendees working in various fields of thin film optical coatings including those who have little to no experience in OptiLayer software. Experienced OptiLayer users are also welcome to gain the most recent knowledge in thin films. The workshop includes one beginner’s day and two advanced days.

What will you learn?


The participants of the first day, Beginner’s day, will learn basic principles and ideas of OptiLayer software. Using practical exercises, they will be able to create their own thin film material, substrate, and design databases, evaluate spectral characteristics of the most widely used types of optical coatings and design coatings with requested spectral properties. By the end of the first day, they will also learn how to import measurement data and to perform characterization of thin films using spectral photometric data.

The next two days of the course will cover the main issues and the most recent advances related to the design and production of optical coatings. It will be demonstrated how OptiLayer meets the most urgent needs and requests of our customers. The main goal of these two days is to show how progress in design techniques, pre-production and post-production error analysis, monitoring techniques can jointly contribute to maximizing production yield and raise the quality of modern optical coatings.
